I made this in March 2004 in size 30 Clark's Big Ball 3 cord mercerized white crochet thread using a Boye size 10 steel hook. It came out 7 inches across. James' directions called for size 10 crochet cotton and a size 7 steel hook, but I like working with finer thread.
This is one of the most well written patterns I have found. Check out his site, he has a lot of interesting patterns, tips, and links.
