Completed 7 February 2004 in size 20 Clark's Big Ball 3 cord mercerized white crochet thread using a Boye (marked 15¢!) size 10 steel hook. Doily is 12 inches across when blocked.

This is one of the oldest vintage patterns I have tried. It is quite simple, using only chain and single crochet stitches for a fairly dense fabric, but I love the way it utilizes the natural structure of crochet stitches for an elegant result.

Because the pattern suggested using a size 6 hook, I first tried the pattern in August 2003 in Knit-Cro-Sheen (bedspread weight) thread. I stopped increasing when there were 12 instead of 24 single crochets in each section for a 12 inch diameter doily, the size I wanted, but the scalloped border seemed too large in proportion to the "pinwheel" center. view scan

I like it a lot better in the finer thread. It does need to be blocked after laundering. I used stainless T-pins in each of the points of the border to stretch it to shape in the photo above.
