The Suffolk lambs

In 1978 my parents were given three orphaned Suffolk lambs to raise from the flock of the Traisters, family friends who farmed near New Bethlehem PA. Although my parents had lived on their farm near Rural Valley PA since 1965, this was their first livestock.

My father shows my son, about 5 months old, the lambs Joey, Lady, and Blacky.

Geoff at 9 months was turning into a toddler. One of his favorite places to go was to the fence in gran'ma and pap-pap's yard to visit the lambs.

Placid creatures that they were, they would let him pat them, pull their fleece, and poke his fingers at their eyes.

The first shearing from these lambs was the fleece I used to learn to spin.
